Multiple Subjects with 'Or' / 'Nor': The Closest Friend Rule
When three or more subjects, whether singular or plural, are joined by 'or' or 'nor', the verb still agrees with the subject that is *closest* to the verb. The 'Rule of Proximity' remains the guiding principle, regardless of the number of subjects.
- âĻ Rule 1: Subject1 + Or/Nor + Subject2 + Or/Nor + Subject3... = Verb agrees with the subject *immediately preceding* the verb.
- âĻ Example: Neither the parents, nor the children, nor the dog was allowed inside the exclusive club. (dog is singular, closest)
- âĻ Example: Neither the dog, nor the parents, nor the children were allowed inside the exclusive club. (children is plural, closest)
