The Preamble was amended only once by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1976, which added the words 'Socialist', 'Secular', and 'Integrity'. The Supreme Court, in the landmark Kesavananda Bharati case (1973), ruled that the Preamble is a part of the Constitution and can be amended, but its 'Basic Structure' cannot be altered.
